It's 5 O'Clock What is your Pet Eating?
It has been reported that nearly half of all dog and cat illness, which ultimately ended in death, is cancer. This is a most unusual and alarming trend. One of the reasons American dogs and cats are getting very sick can be found in the pet foods they eat everyday. The realities of animal health aren’t much different than human health; if you consume a diet of toxins eventually you will get terribly sick.
Despite the blandishments of pet food advertisements with their appealing graphics and claims of providing natural “complete and balanced nutrition”, most commercial pet foods fall woefully short of providing our pets with healthy nutrition. Without being aware of it you may be feeding your pet chicken heads, “road kill” spoiled and moldy grains, cancerous tumors cut from slaughterhouse animals, tissue high in hormone or pesticide residues, and even shredded Styrofoam packaging, metal ID tags and minced flea collars.
Rendering Garbage Into Pet Food
Don’t expect bag labels to be any true guide to the product content. The list of ingredients on that bag of dry food or can of “meat” may mask the toxic horrors behind innocent phrases such as “meat-meal”, “bone-meal”, and “meat-by-products”. Rendering is the process of grinding up and then melting down scrap material from animals. The list of materials that go into the rendering process is extensive and horrific. As well as animal parts that are typically not used for human consumption, animals classified as “4-D”: dead, diseased, dying and disabled-are rendered. This includes animals with antibiotics in their system and deceased zoo animals.
All Grains Are Not Created Equal
Dogs are not meant to digest lots of grains and certainly not inexpensive, bottom of the barrel filler grains. The wheat, corn and soy found in most commercial pet foods are what is left over after all the nutritional value has been stripped away for human foods. These cheap fillers are used to bulk up the calorie count in dog food. When your dog eats these empty calories the consequences can be severe. Weight gain, allergies, yeast infections, joint pain, itchy skin and poor digestion will make your dog uncomfortable and possibly shorten their lives by several years. Whole grains such as brown rice, barley, and oatmeal and fruits and vegetables should make up the carbohydrate component of your pet’s food. Corn meal, wheat middlings, and soybeans are NOT something you want to see in your dog’s food.
Potentially cancer-causing preservatives are found in most commercial pet foods. Ethoxyquin (an insecticide), Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and BHA Butylated hydroxyanisole are ingredients that you do not want to see on the bag label. The average dog can consume 26 pounds of these chemicals every year from eating poor quality commercial dog food.
